How it works

Three things happen between submit and answer

No black box. These are the actual steps.

Canonicalize your input

Whether you paste https://www.strava.com/segments/34217934/leaderboard?gender=M or just 34217934, we extract the same integer ID. Short links and other Strava paths are rejected.

Check the cache

If we resolved this segment in the past 48 hours, the answer is instant. We do not hit Strava again. The negative result (no creator) is cached for one hour so transient failures do not stick.

Ask Strava

On a cache miss we call the legacy segment-history endpoint that used to expose creators publicly. The athlete ID comes back. We store it and return it to you.

FAQ

Why does Strava hide segment creators?

Strava used to show the creator on every segment page. Around 2018 they removed it from the default UI, leaving the data accessible only through an authenticated endpoint. This tool resolves it for you.

Is this tool legal?

Yes. We only resolve metadata that Strava itself returns for authenticated users. We do not bypass any access control, and we do not touch private segments.

Can I look up private segments?

No. Private segments are not visible to anyone outside the creator. This tool only works on public segments.

Why do I sometimes get "Could not find a creator"?

Some very old segments lost their creator metadata server-side, and occasionally Strava rate-limits the underlying endpoint. We cache negative results for an hour, then re-try.

How many lookups can I do?

Without an account: 2 lookups per hour per IP. Signed-in users get 7 per hour. Repeat lookups of the same segment are served from cache and do not count.

Do you store my lookups?

We cache the segment-to-creator mapping for 48 hours so the next person asking the same question gets an instant answer. We do not log who asked for what.
